05 June 2023
In a stunning display of skill, determination, and unwavering spirit, the Central Coast Mariners emerged victorious in the Isuzu UTE A-League 2023 Grand Final, defeating Melbourne City in a record breaking 6-1 win at Sydney’s CommBank Stadium on Saturday June 3, etched into the history books as the highest scoring Grand Final in the Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s competition.
The highly anticipated return of the Mini D-MAX started the match proceedings, by delivering the match ball onto the pitch. Played in front of a raucous crowd of over 26,500 fans and televised to over 264,000 viewers nationally, the atmosphere was electric as both teams took to the field, aiming to secure the prestigious A-League title. Melbourne City, the regular season champions, were considered favourites going into the match. However, the Mariners, known for their resilience and underdog status throughout the season, were determined to upset the odds.
From the first whistle, the match showcased high-intensity football with end-to-end action, including a hat-trick by the Mariner’s Jason Cummings after scoring the opening goal and converting two second-half penalties. The Mariners' defence stood firm against the relentless attack of Melbourne City, denying their star-studded frontline any clear-cut chances. The Central Coast side showed remarkable discipline and tactical prowess, frustrating their opponents, and limiting their scoring opportunities.
The final whistle brought a mix of jubilation and tears, as the Central Coast Mariners were crowned the champions of the 2023 Isuzu UTE A-League. The underdogs had defied all odds and emerged as worthy victors, lifting the trophy for the first time in a decade.
Isuzu UTE Deputy Managing Director Koichiro Yoshida took to the pitch post-match to congratulate both teams on an outstanding match to close out the season.
"Seeing such an incredible turnout of passionate fans for both teams was the perfect conclusion to an exciting finals series and highlighted a remarkable second season of partnership with the A-League,” said Koichiro Yoshida.
“We offer our heartfelt congratulations to the Central Coast Mariners for their outstanding victory, as well as to runners-up Melbourne City. We eagerly anticipate our continued collaboration with the A-League and Network 10, as we strive to bring the joy of football to all Australians in the upcoming season."
